Tavira is one of the most characterful and beautifully preserved towns of the Eastern Algarve, set on both banks of the River Gilao and just inland from the spectacular coastline of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Whitewashed houses , traditional tiled facades , distinctive hipped roofs,church towers and narrow streets give the historic centre an atmosphere that feels distinctly Portuguese.

The town has a remarkably rich history. The region bears traces of roman settlement and later centuries of Moorish occupation, before Tavira was reconquered in 13th century. By the 15th and 16th centuries it had developed into one of the Algarve’s most important ports and trading centres, and was formally elevated to city status in 1520. This long history remains visible and much-loved old bridge crossing the Gilao.

Beyond the town , the landscape opens into the salt pans and lagoons of the Ria Formosa, where salt continues to be produced and numerous species of waterbirds can be seen. From Quatro Aguas, boats cross the lagoon to the long sandy beaches of Tavira island, providing a wonderful contrast between historic town life and unspoiled natural coastline.

Tavira is also very much a living , year -round town. The Mercado Municipal de Tavira is an important part of local life, with stalls offering fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and other regional products.The original 19th century riverside market, the Mercado da Ribeira, has meanwhile been transformed into an attractive social and cultural space with shops, cafes and restaurants.

For everyday living, Tavira offers supermarkets, independant shops, boutiques, cafes, restaurants, pharmacies and essential services, together with local healthcare facilities. More extensive shopping and specialist medical services are available in the wider Algarve, while Faro and its international airport are 30 min away. Spain is also remarkably accessible, with the border around 30 km to the east.
